THE SOUND OF ONE EGO FALLING
At the beginning of this chapter I referred to bestselling New Age author Wayne Dyer, who has been teaching about the law of attraction for decades. However in recent years Dyer has suffered several rather large ego falls. Ego falls occur when the ego builds a delusion about who or what it is, and then life offers a “correction.” Ego falls are actually a blessing in disguise. If you allow the consciousness of the event to be fully received, the lesson can be learned. The fall may actually lead to a deepening into Spirit—if you pass the “test.”
Wayne Dyer’s late-life tests have been difficult. First his wife, and the mother of his seven children, left him for another man. Not long after, he suffered a heart attack, and the one-time fitness fanatic ended up strapped into a hospital bed. Then, in 2009, he was diagnosed with leukemia. According to Dyer, his is not a life-threatening form of the disease, yet it surely must be a test of his courage and belief structures. Interviews that Wayne Dyer has given after these events indicate that he has encountered his problems with courage, honesty, and humility, and this shows him to be a man who walks his talk. He has openly discussed the way the ego creates illusions, and the way that ego falls can assist us on our spiritual journeys.
Wayne Dyer was once an advocate of the naive version of the law of attraction, but has deepened his understanding of the principle. He now says that we do not attract what we want, but what we are. And “what we are” includes the totality of our consciousness, including the shadow and our soul issues. This is why true consciousness work is not merely about “manifestation,” but about deep soul reflection. It requires humility and an acknowledgement of our physical and emotional vulnerability.
From what I have written in this chapter it should be obvious why I was unable to manifest my vision during that rather difficult time in New Zealand. My dream was built upon a naive understanding of manifestation. Manifestation and true bliss are founded upon the guidance of Spirit, with love as the central theme. They require that we develop an unshakable belief in our self, grounded in an honest acceptance of our soul issues. From that guidance, honesty, and self-belief, an appropriate vision can then be developed and the right actions and timing will follow.
When your vision falls too far out of alignment with where you really stand, you go into delusion. An ego fall is inevitable. I was lucky. Spirit didn’t send the cement truck. It sent the pizza delivery car instead. Not long after begging the government for cash to kick-start my life again, I took a job delivering pizzas. That was perfect for me for a few months. Strangely, I hadn’t ever sat down and tried to manifest myself as a thirty-three-year-old pizza boy. Yet what I really needed to do was go back to basics.
